Yesterday 16 November 2010 Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement. This is expected to be the biggest Royal Wedding since the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer some 30 years ago.
Prince William has given Kate Middleton the stunning sapphire and diamond ring that his father Prince Charles gave to his mother Princess Diana on their engagement.
All of the newspapers in the UK are pubishing photographs of both Prince William and Kate Middleton and also the old photographs of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer from 30 years ago.
Obviously the ring itself is also being widely photographed. It is a blue oval 12 carat Ceylon Sapphire surrounded by a cluster of 14 diamonds. When the ring was bought in 1981 from the Crown Jewellers Garrad of Mayfair it cost £28,500 which was a vast amount of money then.

Diamonds in general are priced by the clarity, colour, cut and carat size of the diamond. If you buy 100 diamonds making up a carat that will be a lot cheaper than one diamond which is sized at a carat. Clarity (which means basically how shiny) the diamond is, is also very important. The more colourless the diamond is – so this means no colour tints- the more expensive it is. Finally cut is also important, well cut diamond allows the light to pass through and gives the diamond a shiny look.
